Commons in the city

The Austrian Green Foundation Grüne Bildungswerkstatt is organising an event focused on urban development. City planning is often based on the final goal of profit making and is directed primarily at investors. The questions of “urban commons” and ownership, as well as the direct democracy processes related to these will be discussed with the contribution of speakers from various fields of research and practice.

EVENT: Conference

DATE: 3 December 2011, 10:00 - 17:00

PLACE: Europe House, Linzer Straße 429, 1140 Vienna

In the last few years, cities have also fallen under the pressure of the neoliberal logic of exploitation. The quality of life suffers in the cities as well as the ability of citizens to participate more actively in shaping of their cities. In response, many different initiatives have emerged, in which people try to regain control over their cities. These initiatives range from Critical Mass events and festivals to neighborhood initiatives, which oppose the sale of their homes and settlements to investors.

The idea of the event is to develop an emancipatory concept of "public", which is not limited to the state, but perceives the residents of cities as responsible and committed people. The event will discuss how to put these ideas into practice.
