The re-industrialisation of Europe?

Many are claiming that Germany is facing the financial and economic crisis better than most of its European neighbours thanks to its strong industry. Therefore, we should not be surprised to see that industrial policy is once again high on the European agenda.

DATE: Wednesday 12 February 2014 - 19:30 to 21:30
VENUE: Schumannstr.8 - 10117 Berlin - Germany

The European Commission wants turn the attention towards a competitive and sustainable economic recovery, and the business associations are advocating the "re-industrialisation" of the continent.

Even in the debate around the socio-ecological transformation of the European society, industrial policy plays an important role: a strong industry is a prerequisite to an adequate level of employment and without industrial innovation resource efficiency and sustainable lifestyles cannot be achieved.

Can a green re-industrialisation contribute to the economic recovery in Europe? What are the success stories that could be taken as a model? Is it a responsibility of Member States to promote green industries, or can the European institutions and programmes play a role?

The Heinrich Böll Foundation is organising in Berlin a new panel debate, part of the series  "Beyond the Crisis" to discuss the issues at hand together with:

  • Reinhard Bütikofer MEP, Bündnis 90/Die Grünen, Co-chair of the European Green Party
  • Thomas Fricke, Chief Economist , European Climate Foundation
  • Moderator: Dr. Simon Wolf, Heinrich Böll Foundation

The conference is free and open to all. More information can be found on the event webpage.
